Philly is a very lively, very exciting city. I love cities that hold historical importance in our country. Philly did not disappoint.
We went to Independence Hall and took the short tour of the building and learned a great deal about the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Across the street was the Liberty Bell. We strolled around town finding a great place to eat a cheesesteak. (with peppers and onions and Cheez Whiz)(the only way to eat one, in my humble opinion) We asked a local and he recommended Jim's on South St. I highly recommend it as well. Not touristy and had great food.
After lunch, we stopped by the Philly AIDS Thrift store and purchased a few souvenirs. After shopping, we found Rosa's Pizza. This is the place where you can pay it forward by purchasing pizza and placing a post it note on the wall for someone who doesn't have the money to eat can come and take a post it note and turn it in for free(to them) food. I bought five, one for each of my family members, as my kids were very inspired by this idea and wanted to be a part of it even though they would not be able to be there. From there, we headed back to the car and back to our hotel. This year, we tried to save money by staying far from city center but I think next time, we will just eat the cost and save ourselves the headache of finding parking for a cheap fare.
The next day, it was overcast and rainy, so we decided to head to Atlantic City, which was only an hour away. We hit up a few thrift stores(would you expect anything less??) and then walked a bit on the beach so mom could collect some shells and then walked into the Tropicana for a bit of penny slots and then headed back to Philly to eat dinner and then back to the hotel.
On day three, we decided to head back to Philly to check out the LOVE sign and some other touristy landmarks. We found the LOVE sign but decided that the one in NYC was bigger and better.(Sorry Philly) We found some neat graffiti too! From there, we headed south to DC. We checked into our hotel room and took advantage of their manager's reception(We are huge fans of Embassy Suites) and then ventured out to take in the evening beauty of our nation's capitol. We got to see a stunning sunset and I got a chance to capture DC at night! (I love taking night pictures) I wish I had brought my tripod!
Day four found us visiting Ford Theater and then walking around to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum for a couple of hours and then we headed home. It was a long drive(6 hours) but leaving DC at 5pm wasn't a smart idea, but we made it home around 12:30.
I am always grateful that we have this time to spend with each other. I look forward to next year!
Love,
K
